What is In-Row Cooling?

Conventional data center cooling floods an entire room with cold air-an approach that works well at minimal power densities. In-Row cooling offers capacity and efficiency gains by moving the air conditioner from the perimeter of the room closer to actual load. Installed on the floor or suspended from overhead, in-row cooling units provide local, focused cooling at the rows of server cabinets which fill the data center.

In-Row: Floormount

The floormount, In-Row air conditioner couples the functionality of a perimeter CRAC unit with a significantly smaller footprint. These products are embedded in rows of data center cabinets, supporting a conventional hot aisle/cold aisle layout.

In-Row: Overhead Overhead units have a unique value proposition. Suspended from the ceiling or housed on top of a cabinet, these units conserve valuable floor space, leaving more room for servers, storage, and switches. Overhead systems allow cooling-strapped data centers to add capacities without new construction. For Greenfield data centers, these systems can serve as dedicated cooling or can complement the baseline cooling and humidity control of traditional CRAC units. High Density, High Efficiency Distance is the cornerstone of In-Row performance. Neither cool air nor warm exhaust air has far to travel, allowing the units to dissipate high heat loads.

Cooling Medium

In-Row solutions, whether floormount or overhead, consist of fans and a cooling coil. Depending on the product, the cooling coil will utilize chilled water or refrigerant as the cooling medium.

Refrigerant based units will require connection to a remote condenser system while chilled water based units traditionally connect to chiller systems.
