Why measure PUE and DCiE?
In today's difficult economic times, consuming
excessive energy is an unnecessary operational costs
burden that few companies can afford to waste. While
achieving the very efficient PUE/DCiE benchmarks
shown in the image above would require a dedicated
commitment towards efficiency, almost every company
can see significant electrical costs savings by
better managing their IT assets, improving air-flow,
and by implementing low-costs / no-costs efficiency
best practices. And savings in energy costs are even
more impressive for data centers that start at lower
efficiency levels! The first place to start is by
benchmarking how efficient your data center is. PUE
and DCiE are data center industry standards that
most major organizations measure and report on. They
also frequently share and publish their benchmark
scores. Comparisons need to be made carefully but
can be an excellent gauge for setting achievable
goals and communicating your efficiency efforts and
the operational costs you can save with your team
members and senior management. What you can't
measure you can't manage!
PUE and DCiE provide you with a clear vision of your
current environment, can be used for a basis for
measuring improvements in your efficiency and for
setting efficiency goals, and are very helpful for
calculating ROI and potential savings in your
operational costs.
