Data centers consume 40 to 50 times more power than comparably sized office spaces. If left unchecked, the EPA predicts ten (10) new power plants would be required to support data center power requirements by 2011. For these reasons, an industry that's forever emphasized 24x7 uptime now has a new focus: achieving the same performance while becoming more energy efficient.
To help data center professionals confront these challenges, 42U has joined forces with Xcel Energy's Data Center Efficiency Program. 42U will serve as a technical resource and advisor to Xcel Energy's data center customers, offering best practice expertise in monitoring, airflow analysis, power, measurement, cooling, and efficiency technologies. As customers demonstrate efficiency improvements in their data centers, they are eligible for cash rebates from Xcel.

What is Xcel Energy's Data Center Efficiency Program?
To encourage conservation, Xcel Energy is offering data center customers in Minnesota and Colorado financial incentives to study power consumption and implement energy-saving strategies.
These incentives are helpful in bringing together business functions to discuss data center efficiency. They also accelerate the return on investment (ROI) of efficiency projects and implementations.
What are the Rebate Amounts?
Efficiency Studies: In Colorado and Minnesota, Xcel Energy will reimburse up to 75% of the cost of an approved efficiency study, not to exceed $25,000.
Efficiency Implementations: If data center personnel choose to implement the study recommendations, they stand to save even more. Xcel Energy will offer a discount of $400 in both Colorado and Minnesota per kilowatt saved for preapproved projects.
What should I expect to learn from the Efficiency Study?
The efficiency study will do the following:
Quantify current energy use
Identify specific strategies and opportunities to become more energy efficient
Project energy savings
Outline a winning base case to implement energy-saving opportunities.
What is 42U's Role in the Program?
42U is an Xcel Energy approved study provider. As such, 42U will conduct the efficiency study, prepare all necessary documentation, and coordinate all study logistics including project management and customer support.
Throughout the engagement, 42U will offer efficiency consulting and can coordinate remediation efforts including specification, installation, and support.
