ConsoleSwitch is an intelligent
switch that enables one RS-232 text terminal to control and monitor
multiple systems through the RS-232 console port. Attached systems can be
a mixture of computers, UNIX servers, and LAN/WAN components. Port
buffering facilitates troubleshooting by allowing the user to scroll back
and forth through accumulated screen data or quickly switch between
systems.

Operation
Manage all connected systems from
your terminal in the data center, or over a telephone line with an
external modem.
ConsoleSwitch is rack mountable and
modularly expandable. A single chassis includes the central processor,
power supply, and control circuitry. The chassis houses up to six Dual
Port Modules, each of which provides connectors and screen buffer memory
for two systems (12 ports total/chassis). Multiple chassis can be cascaded
to support up to 120 systems.
Ports can operate a mixture of baud
rates. Each port contains 32 Kb memory to store approximately 30 full
screens. The buffers continuously accept screen information on a first-in
first-out basis. In Monitor Mode, the user selects a port for viewing, and
can then observe and/or print current or previous screen information. The
Scan command provides convenient viewing of the latest screen of data from
user-selected channels at any time interval from 1 to 20 seconds. In
Direct Mode the user can access and operate any selected device as if the
terminal were directly connected.
An external modem operating up to
19,200 baud over a conventional telephone line can be used for remote
access to the ConsoleSwitch, which is password protected for added
security.
